Asymmetric back-up rings are typically used in applications where there is a high risk of extrusion, such as in high-pressure hydraulic systems.
In addition to preventing extrusion, back-up rings can also be used to reduce friction between the seal and cylinder wall. The back-up ring acts as a guide for the seal, ensuring that it moves smoothly and evenly along the cylinder wall. This reduces wear and tear on both the seal and cylinder wall, extending the life of both components.
