Back up rings are mechanical components primarily used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems to prevent extrusion of the O-ring or seal. They are designed to be installed on the opposite side of the pressure from the seal, to prevent the seal from being forced out of its groove and causing leaks.
The back-up ring is typically made from a harder material than the seal it is supporting, such as Nylon, PTFE, or Urethane. This hardness allows the back-up ring to resist deformation under pressure and provide support to the seal. The back-up ring is positioned in the groove behind the seal, and as pressure is applied to the system, the back-up ring provides a barrier that prevents the seal from extruding into the gap between the piston and cylinder wall.
There are two main types of back-up rings: symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetric back-up rings are identical in shape and can be used on either side of the seal. Asymmetric back-up rings have a unique shape that is designed to provide additional support to the seal on one side only. Asymmetric back-up rings are typically used in applications where there is a high risk of extrusion, such as in high-pressure hydraulic systems.
In addition to preventing extrusion, back-up rings can also be used to reduce friction between the seal and cylinder wall. The back-up ring acts as a guide for the seal, ensuring that it moves smoothly and evenly along the cylinder wall. This reduces wear and tear on both the seal and cylinder wall, extending the life of both components.
